Grinding with patterned grinding wheels

Abstract: Grinding is one of the most important manufacturing processes, especially when high surface qualities have to be realized or if hard or brittle materials have to be machined. Often the grinding performance is limited by workpiece failure due to a high thermal load in the contact zone. Therefore structured or patterned grinding wheels are frequently used to reduce the thermal load in the contact zone. In this paper a new patterning method will be introduced by using a fly-cutting kinematic for the structuring p… Show more

“…Grinding with cubic boron nitride wheels continually gains importance for the machining of hardened steels and many investigations focus on increasing the productivity of rough grinding processes. In order to improve the performance of CBN wheels, Aurich and Denkena focus on the patterning of the abrasive layer [9,10]. Marschalkowski and Uhlmann work specifically on the tool design [11] and use of electroplated tools [12] for high speed and high performance grinding processes.…”

“…The grinding temperature of discontinuous grinding with various grooved grinding wheels was studied by Fang [14], Denkena [15], Mohamed [16], Azarhoushang [17] and Li [18]. Li [18] established the analytical model of grinding temperature for textured grinding wheels.…”

“…[33][34][35] A method for the structuring of grinding wheels was employed, and effect of coolant flow on the wear of the wheel is investigated. 36 Grinding wheels and cutting tools with a different bond and matrix materials were developed and fabricated in recent years. Diamond-coated fibers produced by the chemical vapor deposition or coarsegrained diamond were used for grinding work as abrasive grain.…”
