Ground motion prediction from nearest seismogenic zones in and around Greater Cairo Area, Egypt

Abstract: Abstract. This paper reviews the likely source characteristics, focal source mechanism and fault patterns of the nearest effective seismogenic zones to Greater Cairo Area. Furthermore, M max and ground accelerations related to the effective seismic events expected in future from those seismogenic zones are well evaluated. For this purpose, the digital waveform of earthquakes than M L

“…Consequently, a study on the seismic activity in Saqqara relevant to the Zoser pyramid has been carried out. Using the data reported in Reference 27 , the following map (Fig. 2 b) of the earthquakes that occurred in the effective seismogenic zone in and around the Cairo Area has been developed.…”

“…In absence of publicly available seismic records, the Boore method 28 is adopted to determine the power spectral density function of the ground acceleration at the bedrock, , as a function of the vector of random variables , the frequency as well as the time ; therefore, an evolutionary power spectral density with random parameters is established. In this paper, we generated the vector of random variables by means of the magnitude, , epicentral distance , stress drop , and angle of incidence ; these random parameters are defined by establishing their probability distribution functions from the seismological data given in literature 27 . An equirectangular approximation is used to determine the distances, , between the coordinates of the epicentres of the past earthquakes and the centre of the Zoser pyramid, as well as the incidence angle with respect to the determined E-W side of the pyramid.…”

“…In the central and the northern parts of the Gulf, including the adjacent area as far as the Nile, activity decreases markedly from south to north. There is no seismological evidence that seismic activity of the Suez Rift continues into the eastern Mediterranean [1][2][3][4] and [7] as originally suggested by [8,9]. Intra-plate seismicity occurs in Egypt west of the plate boundary and Gulf of Suez zone (e.g.…”

“…Egypt is distinguished by low to moderate earthquake activity related to the relative motions among the African, Arabian and Eurasian plates [1][2][3][4]. The divergent portion of the plate boundary between the African and the Arabian plates lies in the NNW/SSE-trending Red Sea, and connects at the northwest end to the Aqaba-Dead Sea Transform Fault and the Gulf of Suez shear zone.…”

“…Application of the passive seismic techniques is used frequently in Egypt to obtain fundamental site frequency and amplification factors for seismic hazard assessment at several areas (Abd el-aal, 2008(Abd el-aal, , 2010a(Abd el-aal, , 2010b(Abd el-aal, , 2010c(Abd el-aal, , 2013Abdel-Rahman et al, 2012;El-Hady et al, 2012;Toni, 2007Toni, , 2012Abd el-aal and Soliman, 2013;El-Eraki et al, 2013;Abd el-aal et al, 2015).
