Groundwater circulation relative to water quality and vegetation in an arid transitional zone linking oasis, desert and river

Abstract: In groundwater-dependent ecosystems, groundwater circulation controls the overall water quality and ecosystem dynamics. Groundwater and vegetation across a 30-km groundwater transect linking oasis, desert and river in an extremely arid area were investigated with a series of soil profiles drilled into the unsaturated zone to understand groundwater circulation and its control on groundwater quality and surface vegetation in the extremely arid Lower Tarim River, NW China. Measurements have included water-table d… Show more

“…Furthermore, land use patterns play a very important role in the evaluation of environmental processes for the sustainable management of natural resources and ecosystems conservation [1]. It has been stated that monitoring vegetation dynamics and land cover changes is fundamental for modeling climatic and hydrological scenarios [2,3].…”

“…The degradation of ecosystems is one of the big environmental problems after the water shortages in arid areas. Recently, environmental policy has been determined with respect to groundwater not only as a resource but as a living ecosystem (Huang et al, 2013).…”

“…Variations in groundwater depth and chemistry under the influence of water delivery have been the focus of numerous scholars ( (Chen et al, 2004;Chen et al,2005;Deng, 2009;Hao et al, 2009;Huang et al, 2013;Ji et al,,1998;Li et al, 2010;Xu, et al, 2007;Ye et al, 2007). However, variations in depth and chemistry of groundwater at intervals of water delivery are seldom investigated.…”

“…The lower reaches of the Tarim River are located in a flat alluvial plain where the hydrogeological conditions are relatively simple (Huang et al, 2013). The multi-layered aquifer is dominated by fluvial and lacustrine facies of fine sand and silty fine sand, and locally by eolian sand (Cheng, 1999;Zhou et al, 2008).…”
