Growth and scintillation properties of 3 in. diameter Ce doped Gd3Ga3Al2O12 scintillation single crystal

Abstract: The 3 inch size Ce1%:Gd 3 Al 2 Ga 3 O 12 single crystals were prepared by the Czochralski (Cz) method. Optical constants were measured. Chemical composition analysis and uniformity of scintillation decay and light yield along growth direction were evaluated. The timing resolution measurement for a pair of 3x3x3mm 3 size Ce:GAGG scintillator crystals was performed using Si-PMs.

“…The presence of gallium oxide complicates somewhat the growth process as low level of oxygen must be used to prevent its decomposition. However, the growth of single crystals of the Ce-doped garnet Gd 3 Al 2 Ga 3 O 12 , 3 inch diameter has been reported [58] [see Fig. 5(a)] as well as that of 2 inch diameter single crystals of codoped versions of the same composition [59]- [61].…”

“…Therefore, in addition to the synthesis strategy and characterization of materials, it is also necessary to have a deeper understanding of the scintillation mechanism, which is also the goal that people always pursued in recent years. [ 83,84 ] For oxide scintillator, common materials such as aluminate, [ 85–90 ] silicate, [ 91–94 ] and molybdate [ 95 ] matrix are excellent scintillator materials.…”

“…On the other hand, inorganic single crystals have been manufactured by melt-growth approaches such as the Czochralski (Cz) [2,3], Vertical Bridgman (VB) [4,5], and micro-pulling-down (µ-PD) methods [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14]. In particular, the µ-PD method is suitable for the material research of single crystals because it has a faster growth rate than other conventional melt-growth methods [6][7][8][9].…”
