Regarding exploitation and optimizing fisheries resources management in Tomini Bay, the Layang scad fish (Decapterus russelli, Ruppell 1830) is one of the small pelagic fishes inhabiting the bay that still lacks biological information. The species becomes the main target commodity for local fishers as it is commonly consumed as a protein source for coastal communities. This study aimed to determine the length-weight relationships and the growth pattern of Layang fish caught by fishers from Tomini Bay. The samples were collected once per month at Gorontalo City Fish Landing Spot from April to June 2020. Tomini Bay was confirmed as the fishing ground of all the landed fish. Layang is caught by Mini purse seines with a minimum mesh size of ¾ inch. A total of 896 samples of Layang fish were collected randomly from the fishers' catch during their unloading activity at the landing site. Abdomen dissection was performed on all samples for determining the fish’s sex. The fish samples' total length and body weight were measured using a ruler (nearest = 1 mm) and a scale (nearest = 0.01 gram). The result revealed that the length-weight equation of male Layang was W = 0.000004 L3.1972 (R2 = 97.57%), and that of female was W = 0.0000007 L3.0613 (R2 = 98.99%). This result implied a positive allometric growth pattern, excluding the females in April 2020.

Sardinella lemuru, one of the important pelagic fish in Bali Strait waters, has been reported to be in the overfishing condition. Various studies have been conducted to understand its population condition. Length-weight data has been also widely used to understand the population dynamic of S. lemuru, although data collection generally using manual direct measurement methods, which has the disadvantages if used on the enormous number of samples. Therefore, this research aims to understand the significance of S. lemuru length measurement using digital image analysis (ImageJ) compared with the manual measurement. Moreover, this research also aims to understand the population condition of S. lemuru landed in PPI Kedonganan analyzed using its length-weight data. The result indicated no significance difference between length measurement using manual methods and digital image methods, thus conclude that digital image data can be used to measure the fish length and represent the accurate measurement. Population condition analysis showed that S. lemuru population is in isometric condition (b=3); with indication of declining in the length growth pattern compared with previous research (L∞= 20.75 cm with K= 1.1); the mortality estimation showed that fishing mortality (F=1.27) was lower than natural mortality (M=2.22), with the survival rate higher on smaller size fish. This research result can be used as an addition to the S. lemuru fisheries data and can also be used as reference methods to help conduct sampling and data collection more efficiently.

Gulamah fish (Johnius belangerii) is one type of marine fish found in Dumai waters. The study aimed to analyze the composition of natural feed on the stomach contents of gulamah fish obtained in Dumai. Research methods are survey methods, sampling is done by purposive sampling. The study was conducted in April-June 2022. Gulamah fish samples collected were 60 fish (in West Dumai Subdistrict 30 fish and East Dumai Subdistrict 30 fish). Fish samples were divided into 3 size classes, namely 3.1-8.3 cm; 8.4-13.5 cm and 13.6-18.7 cm. The results showed that the composition of food in the stomach contents of gulamah fish obtained in West Dumai Subdistrict is the size of class I (detritus IP 50%; and fish IP 50%), Class II (detritus IP 64%; fish IP 17.8%; shrimp IP 13.4%; and shellfish IP 4.8%) and Class III (detritus IP 5.6%; fish IP 83%; shrimp IP 5.6%; and shellfish IP 5.9%). The composition of food on the stomach contents of fish obtained in East Dumai Subdistrict consists of class I Size (detritus IP 57%; fish IP 10%; and shrimp IP 33%); Class II (empty stomach contents); and Class III (shrimp IP 100%). This indicates that gulamah fish (J. belangerii) is classified as a carnivorous fish.
