Abstract. Lodging is a serious problem in plant growth, especially in crops growth of the natural habitat. In order to determine the influence of lodging on the growth characters of sweet sorghum, plants grown in natural saline-alkali environment were used to investigate the fresh weight, dry weight, sugar content in the stalks and the photosynthesis index of salt tolerant crop sweet sorghum. Results showed that lodging significantly reduced the growth of sweet sorghum, the fresh weight and dry weight was only 28.3% and 22.5% of the normal plants when lodging occurred after 49 days. Lodging also reduced the stalks sugar content of sweet sorghum, the stalk sugar content of lodged plants was only 45.4% of that in the normal plants, when lodging occurred for 49 days. Lodging reduced the growth and sugar content by reducing the photosynthesis parameters of sweet sorghum grown in the saline-alkali field, thus, affected the accumulation of photosynthate. Interestingly, with the extension of the lodging time, lodging led to a decrease in photosynthetic rate of sweet sorghum mainly due to non-stomatal factors.

ResumenEn las zonas tropicales, las gramíneas son la principal fuente de alimentación para los rumiantes, sin embargo, las condiciones ambientales y el manejo de las praderas inciden directamente en el rendimiento y calidad de las mismas. El objetivo fue estudiar el efecto del rendimiento de los pastos híbridos de Urochloa y pasto Estrella (Cynodon plectostachyus) a diferentes frecuencias e intensidades de pastoreo, con bovinos en el trópico seco. Se evaluaron los pastos Cobra, Mulato II y Cayman (Urochloa) y pasto estrella en frecuencias de corte de 28 y 35 d, e intensidades severo y ligero de 10 y 15 cm, respectivamente, que se distribuyeron de forma aleatoria en un diseño de bloques al azar con arreglo factorial 2 x 2 con tres repeticiones. Se observó efecto del manejo en la acumulación de MS, siendo mayor la acumulación a menor frecuencia e intensidad ligera de pastoreo independientemente del pasto evaluado. El pasto Cobra, Cayman y Mulato II obtuvieron el mayor rendimiento en la frecuencia a 35 d e intensidad ligera con un promedio de 6 679 kg MS ha -1 mientras que, en ese manejo el pasto estrella obtuvo el menor rendimiento con 4 028 kg MS ha -1 . La mayor proteína cruda en hoja, en todos los pastos se encontró en el pastoreo severo e intensidad a 28 d con 20, 20, 18 y 10% en Cobra, Mulato II, Cayman y Estrella, respectivamente (p< 0.05). Se concluye que la mayor producción del forraje se obtuvo al cosechar a una intensidad ligera de 15 cm, cada 35 d y el mayor contenido de proteína se alcanzó cuando el forraje se cosecho a intensidad de 10 cm y una frecuencia de 28 d.

The study aimed to evaluate the agronomic characteristics of elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.) genotypes on energy production in the combustion form. A randomized block design with 3 repetitions was used. The treatments were arranged in subdivided plots scheme, considering as a plot the genotypes and as subplots, the harvest season. The agronomic characteristics plant height (H), leaf length (LL), leaf blade width (LBW), stem diameter (SD), tillers number (TN), stem percentage (SP), dry matter yield (DMY) were evaluated. The rainy season provided greater H to elephant grass genotypes with height above 3.5 m. The average SP obtained by the genotypes was 68.21% and 67.21% to the first and second year of cultivation, respectively, which gives the biomass good quality of burning. The rainy season provided greater DMY comparing to the dry season. In the first year of cultivation there were genotypes with annual dry matter yield (ADMY) above 50 ton ha-1 year-1, however, the non-maintenance of soil fertility promoted the reduction of 39.17% and 39.05% in the DMY and ADMY, respectively. Analyzing the agronomic characteristics, we conclude that the promising genotypes of elephant grass to produce energy in the form of direct combustion are CNPGL 91-25-1, Cubano Pinda, BRS Canará, Porto Rico and Mercker.
