Guided Inquiry Activity for Teaching Titration Through Total Titratable Acidity in a General Chemistry Laboratory Course

Abstract: Acid–base titration laboratories are perennially offered to general chemistry students in preparation for summative assessments of their hands-on and quantitative skills in the field. Here, we present a guided inquiry-based activity focused on total titratable acidity (TTA) as alternative to standard “cookbook” titration laboratory work. This activity is cost-neutral compared with traditional acid–base or buffer titration laboratory activities and introduces students to the iteration and revision aspects of in… Show more

“…This work is not meant to serve as a step-by-step guide on how to perform experiments such as titration, separation techniques, etc. as these are standard in traditional chemistry laboratory textbooks . Rather, it is meant to provide insight on methods that can be used to infuse culturally responsive teaching material in the general chemistry laboratory to increase inclusivity and student engagement.…”

“…Literature [ 15 ] holds that science education should not require students to learn knowledge from textbooks but should master the process or method of scientific inquiry. Literature [ 16 ] holds that the content of textbooks should no longer emphasize students' passive knowledge learning but should involve them directly in the learning process, so as to cultivate students' inquiry ability and enable them to understand and master the inquiry process. According to [ 17 ], most nursing colleges do not provide multicultural nursing education, but only a few universities provide multicultural nursing education.…”

“…Kim and others emphasized the key of design thinking through mode construction based on case analysis and also used the "Internet +" background to achieve a great turning point in maker education [10]. Goeltz and others from the perspective of core literacy, combined with the reality and challenges of basic education, explored the cultivation of students' rational thinking and the improvement of comprehensive ability by STEAM research activities from the perspectives of cultural foundation, independent development, and social participation and raised questions about the development status of STEM education [11]. STEAM education is a practical and interdisciplinary comprehensive education integrating five fields of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics, emphasizing the crossborder generation of knowledge in multiple scenes.…”
