Gut Microbiome Modulation for Preventing and Treating Pediatric Food Allergies

Abstract: The increasing prevalence and severity of pediatric food allergies (FA) demands innovative preventive and therapeutic strategies. Emerging evidence suggests a pivotal role for the gut microbiome in modulating susceptibility to FA. Studies have demonstrated that alteration of gut microbiome could precede FA, and that particular microbial community structures early in life could influence also the disease course. The identification of gut microbiome features in pediatric FA patients is driving new prevention and… Show more

“…The metabolism, homeostasis, and immune system of gut are maintained with the help of gut microbiome. When their populations or living conditions are “dysregulated”, it may lead to metabolic abnormalities; inflammation; and other diseases, such as obesity [ 7 ], type 2 diabetes mellitus [ 8 ], and food allergies [ 9 ]. Moreover, an increasing number of studies have shown that the gut microbiome plays an important role in tumorigenesis and tumor progression, such as breast cancer [ 10 ], prostate cancer [ 11 ], and colorectal cancer [ 12 ].…”

“…In addition, butyrate is the only SCFA produced exclusively by gut microbial fermentation, while others are influenced by host metabolism [186]. Recent findings support the hypothesis that butyrate might contribute to the development of immune oral tolerance and the prevention and treatment of food allergies [187][188][189].…”
