Habitat-related microgeographic variation of worker size and colony size in the ant Cataglyphis cursor

Abstract: In social insects, colony size is a crucial life-history trait thought to have major implications for the evolution of social complexity, especially in relation to worker size polymorphism. Yet, little is known about how ecological factors can affect and constrain colony. Here, we explored the pattern of colony-size and worker-size variation in the Mediterranean ant Cataglyphis cursor, in relation to the type of habitats colonized (seaside vs. vineyard). The high level of the water table in the seaside habitat… Show more

“…Because in C. cursor, all the traits usually measured in ants are highly inter-correlated (Cagniant, 1983; pers. data), we only measured tibia length as it directly determines the elevation of the body from the hot substrate and is highly repeatable (Clémencet and Doums, 2007).…”

“…The aim of our study was to test under laboratory conditions whether worker size affects desiccation rate and whether this effect differs according to the temperature and population studied. Interestingly, C. cursor workers are on average smaller in seaside populations than in vineyard ones (Clémencet and Doums, 2007). Hence, in seaside populations, the relationship between thermal tolerance and worker size could be less pronounced.…”

“…This species differs from C. velox, previously studied by Bocher et al (2007), by a lower variation in worker size (Clémencet and Doums, 2007;Cerda and Retana, 1997) and by the fact that body size does not appear to be linked to foraging activity (Retana and Cerda, 1991). C. cursor also has a different breeding and reproductive system with a single polyandrous queen per colony (Pearcy et al, 2004), whereas C. velox is facultatively polygynous (Lenoir et al, 2009).…”

“…Cataglyphis cursor colonies are headed by a single queen (monogynous species) and contain on average around 600 workers (Clémencet and Doums, 2007). Colonies are exclusively founded by colony fission that occurs just after sexual production towards the end of May (Chéron et al, 2011).…”
