Haematological studies on frizzled and naked neck genotypes of Nigerian native chickens

Abstract: Variation in haematological parameters of Nigerian native chickens was studied using 60 clinically normal frizzle-feathered, naked-neck, and normal-feathered native chickens. These included red blood cell count, haemoglobin, packed cell volume, white blood cell count, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration, serum glucose, urea, cholesterol, albumin, globulin and creatinine. Normal-feathered birds had higher (p<0.05) mean values compared to frizzled and native neck genotypes except … Show more

“…The non-significant changes of RBC and indices related to it in all the treatments imply that there was neither destruction nor changes in the rate of production of RBCs. Haematological parameters obtained fell within the normal values reported by Peters et al (2011). This clearly points to the fact that birds in all the treatments performed their normal phagocyte functions and MKM did not cause any toxic effect.…”

“…Although, the Anak breed was significantly heavier than the NHLE chicken, both showed a great potential by achieving BW above 1.5 kg by the eighth week. The final BW (1.8-2.12 kg) for Anak breed and (1.50-1.9 kg) for the NHLE chicken were within the range of 1.82-2.12 kg and 0.9-2.5 kg obtained by Peters et al (2011) and Egena et al (2014), respectively. The results of the present study agree with the findings of Teguia and Beynen (2004), who reported that broilers fed on diet containing mango kernel had higher BWG at lower levels of inclusion but at variance with the findings of Diarra et al (2010) who reported a higher BWG at higher (60 %) level of inclusion.…”

“…According to Peters, et al [21], previous reports stated that haematocrite, haemoglobin and MCH are major indices for evaluating circulatory erythrocytes, and are significant in the diagnosis of anaemia and also serve as useful indices of the bone marrow capacity to produce RBC as in mammals [22].…”

“…This indicated that the overriding potential of MSKE to improve the PCV value could not affect the MSG-induced effect on the PCV value of the rats. Increased PCV value suggested potential increase in RBC production or erythropoiesis resulting to polycythaemia [47,48,51,62,63] as noted in this study; decreased thrombotic events or cardiovascular mortality [50] ; higher protection on the integrity of erythrocytes by boosting their volume percentage in the blood [50] ; improved transport of oxygen and absorbed nutrients [28,30] . The PCV value of the control in this study compared with that in earlier studies [48,62] .…”
