Hairy polyps of the nasopharynx

Abstract: Hairy polyps are rare tumours that can occur anywhere in the body. They are especially rare inthe pharynx. We report two cases of hairy polyps which originated from the nasopharynx. One presented with intermittent obstruction of the airway and the second presented as a visible pedunculated mass protruding from the mouth of a neonate.

“…It is six times more common in females than males [1]. Embryologically, hairy polyp is composed of a central core of mesodermal structures and an outer zone of ectodermal structures [2]. They can measure up to 6 cm in diameter, and they are often associated with feeding difficulty or respiratory compromise in the neonatal period.…”

“…Nasopharyngeal dermoids and teratomas, both known collectively as 'hairy polyps' of the nasopharynx, can produce similar symptoms in the neonate related to nasal obstruction. Nasopharyngeal dermoids are also seen more frequently in females (F:M = 6:1) [10]. Heterotopic neuroglial tissue causing nasal airway obstruction in the neonate has also been reported [11].…”

“…Hairy polyps or dermoids are rare, developmental malformations containing the elements of both ectodermal and mesodermal origins foreign to the sites that they are found [1]. They typically present a pear or sausage-shaped, pedunculated mass in the oronasopharynx.…”
