Hand dominance in early and established rheumatoid arthritis: evaluation by dynamometer, Ritchie index and musculoskeletal ultrasound: a cross sectional study

Abstract: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) usually occurs as a symmetrical disease, which mainly affects the small joints of the hands and feet. The correlation of handedness with radiological changes shows significantly greater radiological changes in the dominant hand than in the non-dominant one. Additionally, the dominant hand is more severely affected in terms of strength, function and deformity. Our objective is to evaluate the influence of handedness on musculoskeletal ultrasound (US), Ritchie articular index (RAI) and … Show more

“…OA causes cartilage breakdown, subchondral bone sclerosis, osteophyte formation, and synovial inflammation, leading to joint pain and physical disability in the aging population [ 10 ]. RA is a chronic autoimmune disease that can affect any joint, but generally involves the large and small joints of the hands, wrists, and feet and tends to be symmetrical in its effects [ 11 ]. RA is characterized by pain, swelling, and destruction of bones and cartilage, ultimately leading to joint destruction and disability [ 12 ].…”

“…A intervenção fisioterapêutica, baseada em exercícios físicos, já é bem descrita na literatura como fator decisivo da reabilitação de outras doenças articulares de caráter artrálgico, sobretudo na artrite reumatoide (AR) [14][15][16] . Da mesma forma, recursos da eletroterapia também são utilizados no tratamento de doenças artrálgicas, com ênfase para o laser de baixa potência, capaz de reduzir a dor em pacientes com AR 17 .…”
