Hand, foot, and mouth disease: Identifying and managing an acute viral syndrome

Abstract: Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common, typically self-limited viral syndrome in children and adults. It is marked by fever, oral ulcers, and skin manifestations affecting the palms, soles, and buttocks, with symptoms usually lasting less than 1 week. Because it has the potential to reach epidemic levels in the United States, general practitioners need to be aware of it.

“…A number of enteroviruses can cause hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD), which is a common infectious disease in young children (Bian et al, 2015;Mao et al, 2014;Repass et al, 2014;Wong et al, 2010;Xing et al, 2014). Among these enteroviruses, enterovirus 71 (EV71) and coxsackievirus A16 (CA16) had been responsible for majority of the HFMD outbreaks before 2008 (Mao et al, 2014;Wong et al, 2010) and therefore have been targeted for vaccine development (Chong et al, 2015;Klein, 2015;Liu et al, 2014Liu et al, , 2015Mao et al, 2014).…”

“…Hand-foot-month disease is a common acute infectious disease in the department of pediatrics in clinic, the relevant data showed the morbidity and mortality of hand-foot-mouth disease are rising, which has already become the one of important public health issues [13]. Currently, a lot of clinical studies proved that the ribavirin could be used in the treatment of hand-foot-mouth disease, which also could inhibit the inosine 5-monophosphate dehydrogenase, prevent the inosine turning into guanylic acid, and the virus DNA, RNA replication, which have the favorable inactivation and cause less harm to body [9,14].…”
