Hardware-in-the-loop simulation testing and its integration into a CACSD toolset

Abstract: Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulation allows ECUs to be tested in a simulated environment in closed-loop. Engines, vehicles, and other components the ECU normally controls are replaced by high-fidelity models executed on a real-time computer system. It is shown that it is now possible to use the same tools for Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulation that have been used in the control development, for the benefit of easy use and reuse of models.

“…13 shows the platform used to perform hardware-in-the-loop simulation experiments with the linear model of the mini-press. Hardware-in-the-loop simulation [11] refers to a technology where some of the components of a pure simulation are replaced with actual hardware. A ControlDesk application was developed in order to change the parameters of the controllers.…”

“…HILS (Hardware-In-the-Loop Simulation) has been in use in Defense and Aerospace industry as early as the 1950s, and then is adopted in automotive industry in the 1990s due to timing and cost involved with the design and verification process of new vehicles (Hanselmann, 1996;Nabi et al, 2004). Since then, several successful HILS have been implemented (Hanselmann, 1997).…”

“…Since then, several successful HILS have been implemented (Hanselmann, 1997). Earlier applications for HILS are mainly control for the engine and vehicle dynamics, but nowadays all the electronic control units (ECU) in a vehicle series are tested by means of HIL simulation, as the overall network of electronics system in any vehicle has reached an almost unmanageable level of complexity (Lamberg, 2004).…”

“…Following the lead of the auto industry [15], the wind turbine industry has begun moving toward adoption of hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation as a method for real-time testing of embedded control systems during the development phase without using prototypes. On the contrary of computer simulation, HIL simulation uses one or several real components instead of their simulation model, and the other parts of the process are simulated.…”
