Harvesting Season and Botanical Origin Interferes in Production and Nutritional Composition of Bee Pollen

Abstract: We aimed to evaluate the frequency of bee pollen production, its botanical origin and chemical composition when collected in different seasons. Our results indicate that higher proteins (22.80 ± 3.09%) and flavonoids (2789.87 ± 1396.00 μg 100g -1 ) levels were obtained in the winter season, which also showed greater pollen production (134.50 ± 35.70 grams) and predominance of the Myrtaceae family. As for spring we found high concentrations of lipids (4.62 ± 2.26%) and low ash content (2.22 ± 0.39%). Regarding … Show more

“…Pollen collection varies widely among different seasons and is affected by the availability of major pollen sources [23,[34][35][36][37][38][39]. In the Al-Ahsa Oasis, Taha [36], Taha and Al-Kahtani [40], and Taha et al [41,42] observed that over 69% of the studied pollen loads were harvested during spring and winter.…”

“…In the Al-Ahsa Oasis, Taha [36], Taha and Al-Kahtani [40], and Taha et al [41,42] observed that over 69% of the studied pollen loads were harvested during spring and winter. Additionally, the nutritional value of bee pollen is reportedly affected by the harvest season [23,37,43,44]. Harvesting pollen loads collected from a specific botanical origin is a complicated process that takes time and effort.…”

“…Pollen pellet is not a bee product exactly, but it is referred to bee-keeping products (Negrão and Orsi, 2018). The pollen collected by the bees is called pollen pellets, as the bee carries it in the baskets of its legs.…”

“…Bee forage types affect the quantity and quality [42] of honey yield obtained per colony [30,31,33,43]. According to the sampled beekeepers, the existence of some special honeybee floras in the study district results in the production of goodquality and high-quantity honey and increases the frequency of harvests.…”
