Hazard connected to railway tunnel construction in karstic area: applied geomorphological and hydrogeological surveys

Abstract: Abstract. In a mature karstic system, the realisation of galleries using the methodology of railway tunnel boring machine (TBM) involves particular problems due to the high risk of interference with groundwater (often subject to remarkable level variations) and with cavities and/or thick fill deposits. In order to define groundwater features it is necessary to investigate both hydrodynamic and karstification. To define and quantify the karst phenomenon in the epikarst of the Trieste Karst (Italy), an applied g… Show more

“…The construction of tunnels in karst regions confronts many problems due to te unpredictable location, sape and dimension of karst voids (Day 2004;Sang et al 2004;xeidakis et al 2004;Casagrande et al 2005;Knez et al 2008;Peila & Pelizza 2009;Ismail et al 2010). The study also tried to evaluate te potential impact of railway tunnel works on te ypogean environment, and especially on seepage and groundwater, in order to avoid any impact on te karst ecosystem.…”

Tunnels in karst areas may generate multiples engineering and environmental problems (Milanovic, 2004;Casagrande et al, 2005;Alija et al, 2013). A tunnel works as a drain, producing a drop in the water table on the drilled aquifers (Raposo et al, 2010).…”
