Headache in Caucasian patients with Moyamoya angiopathy – a systematic cohort study

Abstract: Background Headache is common in patients with Moyanoya angiopathy (MMA), but usually underestimated in its management and not well characterized. Methods A validated self-administered headache screening questionnaire and a telephone interview were used in order to investigate headache characteristics, frequency and pain intensity in a large cohort of 55 German patients with MMA. Results Thirty-seven patients (67.3%) had suffered from headache in the past year. Headache intensity was rated 3.2 ± 1.3 on a verba… Show more

“…In our study, the majority of these patients (75.5%) reported migraine-like headaches either alone or accompanied by a tension-type-like headache, and this finding is supported by other studies (5). There were no differences regarding the frequency of headache (days/month, p > 0.1) before admission, but the intensity of the headache before admission varied (AVS, p = 0.028).…”

“…Moyamoya disease (MMD), named first by Suzuki, is characterized by progressive steno-occlusion at the terminal portion of the internal carotid artery (ICA) accompanied by abnormal vascular networks (1)(2)(3). Headache is a common clinical manifestation in patients with MMD, but this is commonly underestimated in its clinical management (1,4,5). Several existing studies confirmed the high prevalence of headache in MMD, but the effect of surgical revascularization on headaches associated with MMD remains controversial (4)(5)(6)(7)(8)(9).…”

“…Typical manifestations include weakness, numbness, speech changes, and seizures, as well as headaches and dizziness. To date, headaches and dizziness associated with moyamoya have not been well-characterized in the literature -and were not well-characterized in our patient -but headaches with migrainous and tension-like properties have been reported [23,24] .…”

“…Main manifestations in childhood or early adulthood are strokes or cerebral bleedings. Often earlier transient ischemic attacks, headaches or choreatiform movements are not recognized as severe warning symptoms before disabling manifestation ( Kraemer et al, 2012a ; Kraemer et al, 2016 ; Kraemer et al, 2017 ). This “orphan disease” is more often recognized in Asians, especially in Japan and Korea.…”
