Health- and Disease-Related Biomarkers in Aging Research

Abstract: This article focuses on a synthesis of knowledge about healthy aging research in human beings and then synthesized nurse-led research in gerontology and geriatrics that use biomarkers. Healthy aging research has attracted considerable attention in the biomedical and basic sciences within the context of four major areas: (a) genetic variations as an expression of successful or unsuccessful aging; (b) caloric restriction as an intervention to slow the progression of aging; (c) immunological aging; (d) neurobiolo… Show more

“…Concurrently, the number of CD27-CD28-CTLs was 30-50% higher in workers classified in the highest tertile of each stress parameter compared with those in the lowest tertile. Taken together, their results illustrate that psychosocial stress contributes to immunological aging (see also Buske-Kirschbaum 2009;Thompson and Voss 2009).…”

“…These categories were subdivided by frequency of terms in publication abstracts and significantly related subcategories were merged. For example, we merged aging biomarkers and drug targets into Aging-related markers and targets , as aging-related biomarkers were investigated in numerous studies, and some of them were selected as drug targets for anti-cancer or anti-aging therapies [35] [38] . Currently the system contains two main top-level categories: natural and behavioral and social sciences and three auxiliary top-level categories: events and training programs, theories of aging and infrastructure.…”

“…The field of nursing science has a growing, albeit still small, number of examples of how genetic information can inform about functional impairment risk, intervention response and symptom expression (Doong et al, 2015; Thompson & Voss, 2009). Epigenetics refers to changes in gene expression without a change in the underlying DNA sequence.…”
