Health behaviour models and patient preferences regarding nutrition and physical activity after breast or prostate cancer diagnosis

Abstract: This study aimed to improve understanding of prostate and breast cancer survivors' physical activity and nutrition and the association of these behaviours with two models. The first model, the Commonsense Self-Regulation Model (CSM), addresses cognitive and emotional perceptions of illness whereas the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) focuses on stage of readiness to engage in a behaviour. Participants who had been diagnosed with either breast (n = 145) or prostate cancer (n = 92) completed measures of demographic … Show more

“…Following 3 consecutive literature searches and full‐text coding by the first author (using a coding manual and coding sheet: see Appendixes S3 and S4), the final number of studies for the systematic review was 54, with 38 included in the meta‐analysis (on the basis of relevant data) . A flowchart of the study selection process can be found in Figure , with a detailed description of the search process in Appendix S5.…”

“…Furthermore, change methods derived from of the self-regulation theory [ 45 ] were applied. Previous research has demonstrated that interventions targeting cancer survivors’ behavior change, such as PA and dieting are effective when these incorporate social-cognitive theories [ 46 , 47 ]. The theoretical models explain behavior change as a dynamic process with a series of awareness, initiation, and maintenance phases that are influenced by pre-motivational (awareness and knowledge), motivational (intention, attitude, self-efficacy), and post-motivational determinants (goal setting, action, and coping planning) [ 48 – 50 ].…”

“…Therefore, strategies to enhance physical activity are indicated (Moyad, Newton, Tunn, & Gruca, ; Nguyen et al., ; Taaffe et al., ). PCa patients show a positive attitude towards exercise programmes (Cormie et al., , Green, Steinnagel, Morris, & Laakso, ). Furthermore, a multicentre randomised controlled trial showed that a supervised exercise programme is more effective than providing educational material about physical activity (Galvao et al., ).…”
