Healthcare staff's experiences of implementing one to one contact in nursing homes

Abstract: Background: Person-centred care is often described as an ideal way of preserving vulnerable persons’ wellbeing and dignity and an essential component of quality-care delivery. However, the staff find that making the care dignified is the most challenging issue, often because of effectivity, everyday stress and overload. In the interests of making the care more person-centred, systematic intervention involving ‘one-to-one contact’ (resident – carer) was trialled for 30 min twice a week over 12 months in two uni… Show more

“…Overall, the findings suggest that an individualized technological intervention such as SENSE-GARDEN has a promising impact on facilitating meaningful activities in dementia care, particularly with regard to stimulating emotional experiences, preserving a sense of narrative identity, and improving interpersonal relationships-both on a familial and professional level. The findings are consistent with previous studies that implemented meaningful activities tailored to people with dementia in care homes which found that staff are encouraged to see the unique personhood of the individual (Broome et al, 2017: Figueiredo et al, 2013Fritsch et al, 2009;Helgesen et al, 2020;Kuosa et al, 2015). This can improve the caregiving interaction, resulting in benefits for both staff and resident (Figueiredo et al, 2013;Helgesen et al, 2020).…”

“…Communication training involving person-centered interventions can also help in this regard. Examples of effective interventions that can improve the relationship between caregivers and residents include regular one-to-one contact between residents and caregivers, as well as implementing biographical approaches such as storytelling [ 33 , 34 ]. Improved relationship and communication between caregivers and residents can lead to more needs communication and fewer unmet needs for residents [ 35 , 36 ].…”

“…Today, staff shortages in general, and shortages in nursing staff in particular, as well as high turnover rates, present major challenges to healthcare delivery [ 2 ]. The demand for efficiency and everyday experiences of stress and feeling overwhelmed among nursing staff makes providing person-centered and dignified care challenging [ 3 ]. The staffing needs within healthcare services are estimated to double by 2060 [ 4 ]; therefore, new and innovative solutions are necessary.…”
