Heart Rate Variability for Quantification of Autonomic Dysfunction in Fibromyalgia

Abstract: ObjectiveTo quantify autonomic dysfunction in fibromyalgia patients compared to healthy controls using heart rate variability (HRV).MethodsSixteen patients with fibromyalgia and 16 healthy controls were recruited in this case control study. HRV was measured using the time-domain method incorporating the following parameters: total heartbeats, the mean of intervals between consecutive heartbeats (R-R intervals), the standard deviation of normal to normal R-R intervals (SDNN), the square root of the mean squared… Show more

“…The COMPASS 31 has already been reported as a useful tool for the evaluation of autonomic dysfunction in various neurologic diseases such as multiple sclerosis, polyneuropathy, and fibromyalgia [1012]. However, only one previous study has used the COMPASS 31 in MSA and PD patients [7].…”

“…Heart rate variability (HRV) is a commonly used method for assessment of autonomic dysfunction [4][5][6]. Manzano et al established that smoking leads to an acute alteration in the autonomic control, associated with sympathetic overactivation and diminished vagal activity.…”
