Heat treatment and germination of seeds of interspecific hybrid between American oil palm (Elaeis oleifera (H.B.K) Cortes) and African oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.)

Abstract: -The oil palm (E. guineensis ) is the African origin and the world's leading source of vegetable oil. The interspecific hybridization of the African oil palm (E. guineensis) with American oil palm (E. oleifera) aims to improve resistance to diseases, to improve oil quality and lower plant height. EMBRAPA (Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária, Brazilian Corporation of Agricultural Research) has developed the first Brazilian interspecific hybrid cultivar (HIE) between American oil palm and African oil pal… Show more

“…Rodr.) Noblick, at 40 °C for 21 days and, after that, at a constant temperature of 30 °C (Schlindwein et al, 2013); and in the interspecies hybrid Elaeis oleifera (Kunth) Cortés x E. guineensis Jacq., at 39 ± 1 ºC for 75 days and, after that, at a temperature between 27 and 30 °C (Lima et al, 2014).…”

“…Only in recent years, a wide range of characteristics of O×G interspecific hybrids has been thoroughly studied and described: yield and morphology [15][16][17][18][19]; phenological stages [20]; genome size [21,22]; sensitivity to water stress [23,24]; physiological and biochemical response to aluminum toxicity [25]; nutritional status [26]; seed germination [27]; fruit abscission process [28]; and mycorrhization process [29]. Even a comparative characterization of the physiological and biochemical performance of seedlings of O×G hybrids grown in hydroponics was carried out [30].…”
