Heavy metal ions adsorption from mine waters by sawdust

Abstract: In this work the results on the batch and column adsorption of copper and some associated ions by employing linden and poplar sawdust as a low-cost adsorbent are presented. The mine water from a local abandoned copper mine, as well as synthetic solutions of those ions which are the main constituents of the mine water were both used as a model-system in this study. The adsorption ability of the chosen sawdust to adsorb heavy metal ions is considered as a function of the initial pH of the solution and kind of me… Show more

“…The reported concentrations of Cu in industrial wastewater range from 5 to 1000 mg/L [1,2]. The use of Cu increased the possibility of influent contamination by high levels of toxic Cu in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs).…”

“…A wide range of copper concentrations have been reported in untreated effluents, from several thousand milligrams per litre in mining effluents to less than 100 ppm in semiconductor effluents [1,2]. Copper speciation in water is complex and is influenced mainly by pH; below pH 6, the Cu(II) ion is the predominant form, whereas aqueous CuCO 3 and the [Cu(CO 3 ) 2 ] 2− ion predominate at pH 6-9.3 and pH 9.3-10.7, respectively [3].…”
