Heavy Metal Ions Removal From Wastewater Using Cryogels: A Review

Abstract: Water contamination by heavy metal pollution is induced by rapid industrialization and urbanization. Removal of heavy metal ions from wastewater is of prime importance for a clean environment and human health. The heavy metal problem is seriously threatened to human health. In addition, these metals are toxic and carcinogenic. They cause serious problems for aquatic ecosystems and especially humans. Different methods have been utilized to remove heavy metals from the wastewater, such as membrane filtration, ad… Show more

“…These functional groups could gravitate positively charged metals found in a solution through the adsorption process (Chen et al, 2021 ). Moreover, Refaay et al ( 2022 ) attributed the adsorption capacity of alginate to the richness with carboxyl groups, where calcium ions could be replaced by hydrogen ions on the carboxylic acid groups of the adjacent chains, forming a polymetric matrix of Ca-alginate distinguished by excellent pollutant capability through passive adsorption between metal ions and binding sites on the molecular structure (Tiwari & Kathane, 2013 ; Bilal & Iqbal, 2019 ; Aslam et al, 2021 ).…”

“…26 Some other reports used a glucolipid biosurfactant or a cryogel for heavy metal removal from wastewater. [27][28][29] These limited studies of heavy metal removal by gel materials are basically related to polymeric gels or high molecular weight gels. Therefore, in this report, the introduction of a modified hydrophobic LMW organogel with a second component has been used for water remediation with increased adsorption capacity as compared to previous limited reports.…”

“…Removing heavy metal ions from water is an important aspect that has been extensively studied recently. [25][26][27][28] However, while employing gels for such applications, it is required to fabricate a robust material that is not soluble in water, even partially.…”

“…In recent years, environmental contamination by these metals has become a rising concern for both the environment and global health. Furthermore, human contamination has increased drastically due to an exponential expansion in their use in various industrial, agricultural, residential, and technical applications [ 10 , 11 , 12 ].…”
