Heavy Metal Partitioning in Bottom Sediments of the Matanza-Riachuelo River and Main Tributary Streams

Abstract: This study provides geochemical partitioning, potential bioavailability, and enrichment of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn in bottom sediments collected from the Matanza-Riachuelo River and its main tributary streams. A modified Tessier sequential extraction procedure, complemented with acid volatile sulfide (AVS) and simultaneous extracted metals (SEM) measurements, was applied to determine the partitioning of metals into four fractions (metals bound to amorphous sulfide, carbonate, and exchangeable), bound to Fe/Mn oxide… Show more

“…However, the TOC content is also lower in the Recent sediments of R1TA (black mud) and R1TB (intraformational conglomerate). These low TOC levels were found neither in the neighboring Luja ´n nor in the Matanza-Riachuelo rivers (Cataldo et al, 2001;Rendina & Fabrizio de Iorio, 2012) and may be caused by the sulfur-reducing bacteria (Porzionato et al, 2016) that degrade OM and precipitate sulfides. Consistently, sulfur is more abundant in the sample R1TA, and this may account for the black color of the sediment (in spite of the low OM content).…”

“…Calcite was suggested to interfere with Pb solubility at high metal concentrations, leading to formation of Pb-carbonate precipitates (Rouff et al 2004). The metal was also found to be mainly bound to AVS (Rendina and de Iorio 2012) or to soil organic matter (Gonzáles et al 2000). Our results support the major relevance of labile organic matter as the binding phase for Pb even in calcareous soils.…”

“…The levels of organic matter and phosphorus were higher in the middle and lower subbasin, sulfides in the middle subbasin, and nitrates in middle and upper subbasins. These variables play a key role in the dynamics of pollutants within this matrix (Eggleton and Thomas, 2004;Rendina and Iorio, 2012) and reflect a direct relationship to land use as a potential source of contamination of organic origin (Di Marzio et al, 2005). As mentioned above, several sectors of the middle subbasin evidenced sewage pollution associated with informal urban settlements, which relationship would necessarily point to that housing situation as being an anthropic source of organic loading into the stream system.…”
