Heavy metals burden of Keenjhar Lake, District Thatta, Sindh, Pakistan

Abstract: Detection of heavy metals (HMs) content from Keenjhar Lake water was carried out monthly from January to December, 2003. Zinc, chromium, copper, iron, manganese, nickel and cadmium were analyzed by dual mode of analytical methods flame atomic absorption spectrometry and electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS and ETAAS) by multi element standard solution. The concentrations of zinc, chromium, copper, iron, manganese Nickel and cadmium were 1.4 to 104.3 µgL-, respectively. Zn 2+ , Cr + , Cu 2+ , Fe … Show more

“…The TDS (total dissolved solids) values in the epilimnion were low compared with hypolimnion, which seems to be attributed to algae and other aquatic plants consuming salt and the rate of evaporation in the epilimnion. According to Lashari et al (2009), the number of dissolved salts and temperature greatly affects the water's ability to hold dissolved oxygen, and this fact supports the assumption that the hypolimnion has higher TDS values since the hypolimnion was anoxic during stagnation.…”

“…In contrast, aerobic respiration by the different organisms requires oxygen and thus reduces pH (Hamid et al, 2020). Additionally, the pH depends upon the presence and absence of carbon dioxide, carbonates, and periphytic algal density in the water (Lashari et al, 2009).…”

“…Metal sheeting is a prevalent construction material in around half of the buildings built with an earthen floor. Seventeen fishermen's residents live on their boats, which lack basic electrical and gas amenities, therefore, kerosene lamps are used for illumination and charcoal is mostly used for cooking [ 29 ]. Only 19 % of the fishermen possessed home furnishings such as a TV, refrigerator, stove, or iron, and therefore only 5 % had a motorcycle, according to land acquisition data.…”
