Heavy Metals Detection with Paper-Based Electrochemical Sensors

Abstract: This Feature summarizes recent works in paper-based potentiometry and voltammetry in heavy metal determination. Interactions of paper substrates with heavy metals, influence on the sensing response, and modification methods applied to paper substrates to improve the performance of recently developed electrochemical sensors are discussed. Since the rekindling of interest in paper-based analytical devices, methodologies and electrode designs for heavy metal determinations are highlighted. Promising aspects of th… Show more

“…This will lead to the heavy damage of organs or disorder of the nervous system of humans. Currently, colorimetric, fluorescent, electrochemical, and chemiluminescent paper-based sensors proved their practicability in sensing heavy metals [86]. Yu's team designed a type of Fe 3+ -sensitive metal-organic framework nanocrystal material for fluorescence-based Fe 3+ detection (Figure 5b) [83].…”

“…To achieve higher performance of electrochemical sensors, numerous studies have been carried out, mainly including the development of new electrodes, modification of electrodes, construction of detection modes, and design of signal labels [ 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 ]. To overcome the limitations associated with high costs and complex processing procedures of traditional electrodes (glassy carbon electrodes, silver, and gold electrodes, etc.…”

“…12,13 These factors have contributed to great attention devoted to fluorescent sensors in comparison with other sensing methods. [14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21] Metal-mediated base-paired DNA (in the form of aptamers or oligonucleotides) has long been scrutinized in basic scientific research and for the purposes of fluorescence biosensing applications. Oligonucleotides, having a strong interaction capability with specific metal ions, are well suited to the creation of a fluorometric biosensor due to the ease of tagging fluorophores at precise positions, binding-induced changes in oligonucleotide structures, hybridization of the oligonucleotides to complementary oligonucleotide sequences, changes in molecular volume upon the binding interaction of oligonucleotides with their target (metal ions or biomolecules), and adsorption of oligonucleotides onto quenching nanomaterials.…”
