Heavy Metals Distribution and Contamination in Groundwater of the South Eastern Coastal Area of Bangladesh

Abstract: Groundwater provides the largest source of usable water storage in Bangladesh. Groundwater samples have been analyzed for Fe, Mn, Zn, Ni, Cr, Cu, Cd, Pb, and Co using atomic absorption spectrophotometer to evaluate the heavy metal distribution and contamination level at the southeastern coastal area of Bangladesh. Heavy metals in water samples are in the range of Fe (490-4710 µg/L), Mn (13-1970 µg/L), Zn (70-550 µg/L), Ni (42-255 µg/L), Cr (25-133 µg/L), Cu (34-95 µg/L), Cd (7-26 µg/L), Pb (0-20 µg/L), and Co … Show more

“…The mean value of EC was also ranged between 1919± 89.1, 1614 ± 286 and 674 ± 70.7 μS/cm for shoreline, interim and inland villages (table 6a). Similar type of finding was found in Khulna District (interim zone) for EC (100-6830 μS/cm), for pH (6.4 -7.9), respectively (Mahmud et al, 2020); temperature (27.95⁰C), EC (804 μS/cm), pH (7.7) and TDS (522ppm) in cox's bazar district (Deeba et al, 2021).…”

“…The correlation result showed some positive and negative relationship among the determined variables (table 6). The positive correlation represented the variable's homogeneous source of origin and negative correlation represented the heterogeneous source of origin (Deeba et al, 2021;Giri and Singh, 2015). The correlation between EC: TDS (r=0.712), TDS: Ca (r=0.585), DO: K (r=0.5041), Cl-: K (r=0.581), K: Ca (r=0.635) showed a strong positive relationship, that suggested the same sources of origin of variables and same anthropogenic activities or variable movement were responsible in the study area (Deeba et al, 2021;Haloi and Sarma, 2012).…”

“…From Cox's Bazar to Teknaf region, the Eastern Coastal Zone is made up of a series of anticlines and synclines, comprising a distinct syncline in Cox's Bazar while an anticline in the Teknaf region (Alam et al 1990, Deeba et al 2021). The northwestern portion of hill ranges, the foredune and the backdune have bordered the studied area.…”

“…Fifteen representative groundwater samples were collected from the study region. The procedure for collecting samples was explained in Deeba et al 2021. Onsite measurements of physical parameters were conducted by portable meters (HANNA-HI 9813-5 for pH and Temperature and HANNA-HI 8733 for EC and TDS).…”
