Heifer rearing conditions affect length of productive life in Swedish dairy cows

Abstract: Associations between rearing conditions and the risk of culling in dairy cows were studied by survival analysis. Data were collected from 1039 Swedish Red cows, 1029 Swedish Holsteins, and 56 cows of other milk or cross-breeds, representing all female animals born in 109 Swedish herds during 1998. Length of productive life was defined as the number of days from 1st calving to culling. The applied Weibull proportional hazards model included time-independent effects of breed, housing from 3 to 7 months of age, n… Show more

“…A long productive life will counteract high costs for rearing or a low milk production, and there might thus be conflicting effects of a risk factor on culling risk and milk production. Using data from the same cows, we have earlier found a high calving age -at least up to 28 mo -to be associated with both a high milk production in 1st lactation and an increased risk of culling (Hultgren and Svensson, 2009). To our knowledge, there are no previous studies of effects of calving age on lifetime milk production or milk revenues.…”

“…Their health until calving was described by Svensson et al (2003Svensson et al ( , 2006a and Hultgren et al (2008), based on the same data. Herd selection, data collection and herd management were described by Svensson and Hultgren (2008) and by Hultgren and Svensson (2009).…”

“…1992) were non‐significant. While a Swedish study found a shorter productive life in heifers grazed before first calving (Hultgren and Svensson 2009), a French study did not (Troccon 1993). It is concluded that there are insufficient studies to be definitive about the effects of divergent management systems on replacement heifer performance but existing data indicate minimal effects.…”

“…Calf rearing is an essential part of dairy herd management and is a prerequisite for a productive lifetime of dairy cows (Hultgren and Svensson, 2009). Calf mortality is one of the parameters that give an indication of the quality of rearing and the welfare of the calves (Ortiz-Pelaez et al, 2008) and is an important cause of economic loss in dairy production (Meyer et al, 2001;Østerås et al, 2007;Mee et al, 2008).…”
