Helicity of a polyacetylene directed by molecular recognition of biscalixarene and fullerene

Abstract: The dynamic helix interconversion of the C60-appended polyacetylene was directed by the molecular recognition of a chiral biscalix[5]arene.

“…The binding constant between poly-1b-h and 2 was estimated to be on the order of 10 4 L mol À1 (Table 1). The binding constants are close to those observed in the host-guest complexes between biscalix [5]arenes and C 60 derivatives; 43,46,51 thus, these results indicate that the long polymer chains do not impact the binding affinity between calix [5]arene and fullerene.…”

“…The K a between the biscalix [5]arenes tweezers and C 60 was found to be approximately 10 4 M À1 in toluene, significantly higher than the K a between a single calix [5]arene and C 60 . 178 When a molecule is equipped with two or more biscalix [5]arene tweezers, as demonstrated by molecule 24, supramolecular polymers and networks can be formed simply by addition of the dumbbell fullerene 25 (Fig. 12b).…”

“…Linking two calix [5]arene with chiral binaphthalene provides chiral biscalix [5]arene 38 and 39. Both interact with C 60 on C 60 -appended poly-(phenylacetylene) 40 to affect the helix of the polymer (Figure 11) [54]. It is a new approach to control the helical conformation of polyacetylene via host-guest interactions.…”
