Helminth parasites of wild Mexican mammals: list of species, hosts and geographical distribution

Abstract: In the present work, a total of 339 nominal taxa of helminths (53 trematodes, 46 cestodes, 12 acanthocephalans, 227 nem-atodes, and 1 hirudinean), associated with 136 taxa of wild mammals from Mexico, are listed. Information on hosts, hab-itat, distribution, and records is included; these data come from 242 localities, pertaining to 31 of the 32 Mexican states, and represent the current knowledge on helminth parasites of wild mammals in Mexico. Eighteen taxa of helminths are registered for the first time in Mex… Show more

“…The present work represents the first record of a cestode parasitizing a squirrel species in México. Previous to our report, only 10 nematode taxa had been recorded from -Prieto et al 2012;Martínez-Salazar et al 2016). This study increases to 11 the total number of helminth species known from squirrels in México.…”

“…Currently, this family contains 13 genera with more than 59 species parasites of birds and mammals (rodents and lagomorphs) (Hodda, 2011). In Mexico, Heteroxynematidae includes 3 genera: Aspiculuris Schulz, 1927 (2 species), Lamotheoxyuris Falcón-Ordaz, Fernández & García-Prieto, 2010 (1 species) and Dermatoxys Schneider, 1866 (2 species) (García-Prieto et al, 2012). Aspiculuris can be distinguished from other members of the family by having cuticular striations poorly marked and cervical alae well developed, extending from the cephalic vesicle (Petter & Quentin, 1976).…”

“…Aspiculuris are parasites of Muroidea (Rodentia); currently includes 21 nominal species (Arya 1980;Manna et al 1985;Liu et al 2012) distributed worldwide (Goswami et al 2015). In México has been registered in Neotoma mexicana (García-Prieto et al 2012). The main goal of this report is to add one nematode species to the helminth fauna of this host species: Aspiculuris americana Erickson, 1938 infecting an endemic rodent of central México.…”
