Abstract: Between May 1997 and September 1998, 270 atherinopsids belonging to 7 fi sh species were analyzed for helminths in 6 lakes located in central Mexico. In addition, a database with all the available previous records of helminth parasites of atherinopsids was built. Based on both information sources, we analyze the composition of the helminth fauna parasitizing atherinopsid freshwater fi shes from central Mexico, in order to determine some general species compositional patterns. The helminth fauna parasitizing th… Show more

“…The data set was mostly obtained from monographs (e.g. Pérez-Ponce de León et al 1996, 2007; Garrido-Olvera et al 2006; Kohn et al 2006; Salgado-Maldonado, 2006; García-Prieto et al 2010; Oceguera-Figueroa et al . 2010) and specimens deposited in the Colección Nacional de Helmintos (CNHE), Instituto de Biología, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Mexico City.…”

“…The inclusion of the new sequences of O. pedicathedrae showed a phylogenetic convergence between O. pedicathedrae and O. fimbriatus compared to O. furcatus. Opecoeloides pedicathedrae was reported only off the coast of Brazil [3,7,8], while Opecoeloides fimbriatus was reported from the Western North Atlantic [22,39,40], both sides of the Panama Isthmus [41], and the Pacific coast of Mexico [23,42]. Opecoeloides furcatus was reported from Mediterranean waters [21,43,44], off the Canary Islands [45], off the coast of Belgium [46], and from Japan [47].…”
