Helping Teachers to Think About Their Design Problem: A Pilot Study to Stimulate Design Thinking

Abstract: Designing learning experiences for students is a key responsibility of teachers. This involves designing stimulating and engaging tasks, selecting and creating appropriate resources, and deciding how best to support students to successfully complete the tasks. This is a complex process in which many factors need to be considered. Learning design research and tooling is focused on how to support this teacher design work. Existing learning design tools support the authoring and sharing of learning activities, wh… Show more

“…Besides, to provide more options for authoring, several steps have been already carried out for the integration of additional authoring tools. These include SyncMetaLD, a realtime collaborative learning design authoring tool (Nicolaescu et al, 2013), PyramidApp (Manathunga and Hernández-Leo, 2018), and the Design Problem Generator (Hernández-Leo et al, 2017). Further research will be needed to study whether the use of authoring tools that include also conceptualization scaffolding (e.g., Web Collage) or an ILDE feature to support the management of multi-artifact learning design projects (Chacón-Pérez et al, 2016), allow for smoother transition between phases.…”

“…In this sense, research advocates for the concept of training educators as designers [53][54][55]. Indeed, Mishra and Koehler [56] developed their recognized approach to technological pedagogical content knowledge supported by the concept of educators as designers [57].…”

“…Education has also benefitted from DT consideration. Hernández-Leo et al [36] noted that when dealing with the complexities of designing learning experiences for students, DT supported the range of activities from "designing stimulating and engaging tasks, selecting and creating appropriate resources, and deciding how best to support students to successfully complete the tasks". Even at primary school level, DT education interventions lead to a "paradigm shift" [57] and that it would be beneficial to expose children to the values of design and DT.…”
