Hepatitis B vaccination and reduced risk of primary liver cancer among male adults: a cohort study in Korea

Abstract: This study suggested that artificial immunization through HBV vaccination, even in adulthood, reduces the risk of liver cancer. It might also offer a practicable means of primary prevention, especially in areas with hyperendemicity of HBV infection.

“…The high incidence rate of HCC is thought to be related to the high carrier rate of HBV in the general population. The mean HBsAg-positive rate among the Korean population was 5.1% in men and 4.1% in women according to a national health survey carried out in 1998 [15, 16]. …”

“…For primary prevention, a nationwide HBV vaccination program has been conducted since the late 1980s in Korea and, 20 years later, the number of children positive for HBsAg has fallen substantially from 7–8 to 0.6%. Along with this decrease in the HBsAg carrier status, HCC development is expected to decrease in the near future [15, 24]. Secondary prevention is effected by interfering with the metabolism of the carcinogen, or by preventing it from reaching its target.…”

“…PGA is an application specifically designed to calculate statistical power and other values of case-control genetic association studies. For the present study, a co-dominant (1df) model with relative risk 1.3, disease prevalence value 7.1% (Lee et al, 1998), EDF (Effective Degree of Freedom) 2, and alpha error level 5% were used to calculate the statistical power of p-values for HBV clearance and HCC occurrence.…”
