Hepatitis C infection and risk of malignant lymphoma

Abstract: The association between hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and risk of malignant lymphoma remains controversial, perhaps due to small-sized studies and low prevalence of HCV in the general population. On the basis of a large Danish-Swedish populationbased case-control study, 2,819 lymphoma patients and 1,856 controls of second-generation Danish-Swedish origin were screened for HCV infection using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and a confirming recombinant immunoblot assay (RIBA) test. Positive samples wer… Show more

“…Data including in the analysis seven previous surveys, demonstrating that HCV was associated with marginal zone lymphoma, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, and lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma [4]. The association between HCV and lymphomas has been demonstrated also from population with a low prevalence of HCV [5]. The causal role of HCV in lymphomagenesis is also supported by the regression of indolent non-Hodgkin's lymphomas after eradicating the infection [6,7].…”

“…[2][3][4][5]9 Also, there are only two case reports in the literature that evaluate the effect of chemotherapy for Hodgkin's lymphoma on concurrent HCV infection. 5,9 In the first report, Vento et al 5 described a patient receiving ABVD chemotherapy for Hodgkin's disease.…”

“…1,2 However, an association of HCV with Hodgkin's lymphoma is not clear. [2][3][4] As many chemotherapeutic agents are hepatotoxic, treatment of HCV-positive lymphoma patients is a challenge. However, a major issue that has to be considered is the effect of commonly used chemotherapeutics, i.e.…”
