Hepatitis delta virus: A fascinating and neglected pathogen

Abstract: Hepatitis delta virus (HDV) is the etiologic agent of the most severe form of virus hepatitis in humans. Sharing some structural and functional properties with plant viroids, the HDV RNA contains a single open reading frame coding for the only virus protein, the Delta antigen. A number of unique features, including ribozyme activity, RNA editing, rolling-circle RNA replication, and redirection for a RNA template of host DNA-dependent RNA polymerase II, make this small pathogen an excellent model to study virus… Show more

“…HDV is a satellite virus of HBV which mostly targets the human liver 24 , and hence HDV infection is mostly associated with liver disease. HDV infection affects around 20 million people worldwide 36 , however, it is currently somewhat of a neglected disease due to the fact that HBV vaccination is thought to also protect against HDV infection. The recent discovery of deltaviruses in the absence of hepadnaviral co-infection across a wide range of taxa 5, 6, 28 provided the first indications that deltaviruses could be much more enigmatic than originally thought.…”

“…Recent data on the HDV seroprevalence among HBsAg carriers in Cameroon ranged from 11% ( 24 ) to 18% ( 25 ). HDV exhibits a high degree of genetic heterogeneity and has been classified into eight different clades (1 to 8) ( 26 ), of which clade 1 has a worldwide distribution ( 27 ). Only a few HDV genotyping studies have been conducted in Africa.…”

“…The prevalence of HDV infection in this population appears to be <1%, consistent with previous estimates in this part of Africa. 22 , 23 The prevalence was considerably higher (5%) in Nigeria. 24 …”
