Hepatoprotection of Noni Juice against Chronic Alcohol Consumption: Lipid Homeostasis, Antioxidation, Alcohol Clearance, and Anti-inflammation

Abstract: Chronic alcohol consumption leads to steatohepatitis and cirrhosis. Naturally fermented noni juice (NJ) contains polyphenols, polysaccharides, and some trace minerals. This study explored protective effects of NJ against chronic alcohol consumption. Mice were assigned randomly to one of the following groups: (1) control, control liquid diet and distilled water; (2) alcohol, alcohol liquid diet and distilled water; (3) Alc+NJ_1X, alcohol liquid diet and 5 mL NJ/kg BW; (4) Alc+NJ_2X, alcohol liquid diet and 10 m… Show more

“…Numerous papers have reported that extract or juice from fruit of noni is able to modulate functional role of immune cells such as NK cells, CD4 + T‐cells, CD8 + T‐cells, and B‐cells under disease conditions such as the tumor xenograft model, Leishmania amazonensis infection model, paw and ear edema model, picryl chloride‐induced contact dermatitis model, 12‐O‐tetradecanoylphorbol‐13‐acetate‐induced inflammation model, alcohol‐induced liver damage model, 12‐O‐tetradecanoylphorbol‐13‐acetate‐induced skin inflammation model, and DSS‐induced colitis model (Abu et al, ; Akihisa et al, ; Almeida‐Souza et al, ; Almeida‐Souza et al, ; Chang et al, ; Coutinho de Sousa et al, ; Li et al, ; Lim et al, ; Murata et al, ). In this study, however, we investigated the in vivo immunostimulatory activity of Mc‐eWE using mice under normal conditions, because we were curious on the immunoregulatory activity of noni fruit extract under healthy conditions.…”

“…HSCs were activated by ROS and calcium flux which provoked by TGF‐β signal cascade; meanwhile, the results in this study clearly indicated that OSM supplementation obviously could improve the antioxidative system (Table ). In addition, NFκB, a key player in controlling both innate and adaptive immunities, was found an apoptotic modulator in livers . Although the general function had been revealed, the specific function in the development of liver fibrosis is still lacking due to the various cell types in livers.…”

“…Prior studies suggest the critical role of inflammatory mechanisms in modulating hepatic fibrosis [29]. The inhibition of IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α ameliorates the hepatic aggravation during fibrogenesis [30].…”
