Hepatoprotective effect of methanol extracts of Zingiber officinale and Cichorium intybus

Abstract: The present work was carried out to investigate the hepatoprotective effect of ginger, chicory and their mixture against carbon tetrachloride intoxication in rats. Carbon tetrachloride treatment significantly elevated the alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase and gamma glutamyltransferase activities and the serum triglycerides and cholesterol concentration as compared to control group. It also increased RBCs counts and Hb concentration, total or differential leucocytes coun… Show more

“…However, diabetic rats treated with combined spice extract or glibenclamide showed hepatocytes with nearly normal appearance and minimal necrosis. The hepatoprotective activity of the combined spices may be due to the combined free-radical scavenging activities of polyphenols, especially flavonoids, in the spices (Atta et al 2010).…”

“…4,5) Cichorium intybus is widely used medicinally and has been investigated for its potent hepatoprotective activity. [6][7][8][9] Cichoric acid has been shown to possess phagocytosis stimulatory activity in vitro and in vivo, to inhibit hyaluronidase and to protect collagen type III from free radical induced degradation. 10) What is more important is that chicoric acid also exhibits significant antiviral effects against human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) and herpes simplex virus (HSV-I).…”

“…The rise in serum levels of AST and ALT has been attributed to the damaged structural integrity of the liver, because they are cytoplasmic in location and released into the circulation subsequent to cellular damage. The rise in the level of serum bilirubin is the most sensitive and confirms the intensity of jaundice (Krishna Mohan et al, 2007;Atta et al, 2010).…”

“…Pretreatment of rats with the total ethanolic extract of the aerial parts of T. terrestris at a dose of 500 mg/kg induced a statistically significant decrease in the levels of AST, ALT and bilirubin, as well as, a significant increase in the level of serum albumin where stimulation of protein synthesis has been reported as a contributory hepatoprotective mechanism as it accelerates the regeneration process and the production of liver cells (Krishna Mohan et al, 2007;Atta et al, 2010).…”
