Heritability for Yield and Glycoalkaloid Content in Potato Breeding under Warm Environments

Abstract: High temperatures affect potato production in the tropics, putting tuber yield and quality at risk and leading to increased glycoalkaloid concentration the cause of the bitter taste in potatoes and a cause for concern for human health. The International Potato Center (CIP), has developed new heat tolerant clones which are heat tolerant and also resistant to late blight. These clones offer an opportunity to evaluate yield and glycoalkaloid levels after growth under high temperature environments. We evaluated fo… Show more

“…Some of the field sites that reported heat stress on potatoes are San Ramón, Peru, and Lavras, Brazil. San Ramón frequently experiences heat stress ( Khan et al., 2015 ; Benavides et al., 2017 ; Raymundo et al., 2018 ; Muñoa et al., 2022 ) with an average day/night temperature of 28/23°C ( Benavides et al., 2017 ) but fluctuating between 16 to 36°C ( Muñoa et al., 2022 ). In Lavras, Brazil, the mean maximum and minimum temperatures are 28.5 and 16.5°C, respectively ( Lambert et al., 2006 ).…”

“…Of the 156 countries worldwide that plant potatoes ( FAO, 2019 ), heat stress is reported in various places, including tropical highlands. Lavras in Brazil ( Lambert et al., 2006 ); San Ramón in Peru ( Khan et al., 2015 ; Benavides et al., 2017 ; Raymundo et al., 2018 ; Muñoa et al., 2022 ); Jalandhar in India ( Bhardwaj et al., 2022 ), Western Australia in Australia ( Obiero et al., 2022 ) are considered heat stress sites for the selection of heat-tolerant potatoes. Some unexpected areas, like Ontario, Canada, have also been reported to experience heat during the potato growing season.…”

“…Potato tubers in targeted tropical areas tend to add in the glycoalkaloid concentration due to high temperature. These toxic substances cause bitterness and have harmful effects on human health (Friedman 2006;Gastelo et al 2017). A glycoalkaloid level less than 7 mg/100 g is considered safe in warmer area than the acceptable level of 20 mg/100 g in traditional areas (van Dam 2002; Gastelo et al 2017).…”
