Heterogeneity in blood pressure in UK Bangladeshi, Indian and Pakistani, compared to White, populations: divergence of adults and children

Abstract: Blood pressure (BP) and hypertension prevalence differences between UK South Asians (Bangladeshis, Indians and Pakistanis) and White Europeans exist in childhood and adulthood. This meta-analysis sought to quantify these differences. We searched MEDLINE (1946-2017), EMBASE (1974-2017) and GLOBAL HEALTH (1973-2017) for comparative studies and pooled the data with Revman (Cochrane Collaboration). Twenty-two studies were included-fourteen on adults and eight on children. South Asian adults had lower systolic and … Show more

“…Moreover, the heterogeneity of ethnic/racial minority groups, whether African, Caribbean, South Asian (Indian, Pakistani, or Bangladeshi in the UK), Chinese, or other ethnicities, have diverse risk factor profiles, which might be important for COVID-19 outcomes. 19,23 The high prevalence of chronic diseases in US and UK ethnic/racial minorities reflects social and economic disadvantages, and factors such as diet, cigarette smoking, alcohol use, and exposure to psychosocial stressors. 16,21,22 The effects of hostile environments against immigrants, particularly failed asylum seekers and undocumented immigrants, might affect settled ethnic/racial minority populations adversely through heightened prejudice and societal tensions.…”

“…The relationship of blood pressure (BP) with age may not be uniform across the population, as signalled by described differences by sex and race in the BP trajectories over a lifetime [10][11][12]. However, such a simple stratification might ignore other important sociodemographic characteristics that might be driving this relationship alone or in combination, such as income level, education, or occupation.…”
