Heterosis and inheritance of drought tolerance in faba bean, Vicia faba L.

Abstract: Twelve parental lines of faba beans and 27 F1 hybrids derived from them were field‐tested under a dry and a well‐watered treatment, at two German locations (Göttingen, Hohenheim) in two years (1995, 1996). Drought was artificially induced using rain shelters from anthesis until maturity. Data were collected on yield under dry (Yd) and well‐watered (Yw) conditions. Drought tolerance was assessed as Yd/Yw. The mid‐parent heterosis was significant for Yd and Yw, but not for Yd/Yw. Relative heterosis for Yd (52.0%… Show more

“…Though both parental lines were considered droughtadapted (Abdelmula et al 1999;Khan et al 2007), they differed in several morpho-physiological measurements and showed different responses to water-deficit. The RILs showed a wide range of response and transgressive segregation in all studied traits.…”

“…Yield improvement of 50-70% above the midparent values was achieved in crosses either between small-seeded Vicia faba minor and large-seeded Vicia faba major lines (von Kittlitz, 1986) or even within the minor group (Link & Ruckenbauer, 1988). Compared to open pollinated or inbred cultivars, faba bean hybrids have also shown better adaptation to a wide range of abiotic conditions (Bond et al, 1994;Abdelmula et al, 1999). Stelling et al (1994) came to the conclusion that three-way hybrids, double-cross hybrids, or single-cross hybrids grown in blends are the key to yield improvement and stability in faba bean.…”
