High-accuracy long-distance measurements in air with a frequency comb laser

Abstract: We experimentally demonstrate that a femtosecond frequency comb laser can be applied as a tool for longdistance measurement in air. Our method is based on the measurement of cross correlation between individual pulses in a Michelson interferometer. From the position of the correlation functions, distances of up to 50 m have been measured. We have compared this measurement to a counting laser interferometer, showing an agreement with the measured distance within 2 m (4 ϫ 10 −8 at 50 m). © 2009 Optical Society o… Show more

“…switching, routing and regeneration of optical signals, as well as for generation of ultrashort laser pulses [1]. Femtosecond lasers found applications in high-precision metrology of time and distance [2], spectroscopy [3], nonlinear optics and astrophysics [4] and many other applications [5][6][7]. In this review, we discuss carbon nanotube-based photonic technologies and applications making a particular focus on mode-locking fibre lasers.…”

“…This has been exploited in length metrology by implementing a new generation of techniques and achieving very high accuracies. The techniques range from using the ultra-stable inter-pulse distance of the source, 6,7 frequency modulation based measurements, 8 multiheterodyne measurements, 9 time of flight measurements, 10 and spectral interferometry. 11,12 Spectral interferometry using the large spectral bandwidth of the frequency comb, where the illumination can be considered to be made up of thousands of stable lasers makes possible real time monitoring of optical lengths.…”

“…Several measurement schemes for comb-based distance measurement have been proposed and implemented, exploiting the special properties of the comb: a fixed pulse to pulse phase relation, a broad spectrum and a long coherence length. Some schemes are either based on correlation measurement [6][7][8][9] or dispersive interferometry [10][11][12]. Other schemes exploit two combs [13], use the comb as a reference for multi-wavelength interferometry [14] or frequency sweeping interferometry [15].…”
