High-contrast integral field spectrograph (HCIFS): multi-spectral wavefront control and reduced-dimensional system identification

Abstract: Any high-contrast imaging instrument in a future large space-based telescope will include an integral field spectrograph (IFS) for measuring broadband starlight residuals and characterizing the exoplanet's atmospheric spectrum. In this paper, we report the development of a high-contrast integral field spectrograph (HCIFS) at Princeton University and demonstrate its application in multi-spectral wavefront control. Moreover, we propose and experimentally validate a new reduced-dimensional system identification a… Show more

“…Instead of only two channels, as in the DBI mode, the SM-SCC can also use more channels when it is combined with an integral field unit (IFU). Most, if not all, direct imaging instruments contain an IFU for spectral characterization (Groff et al 2015;Beuzit et al 2019;Sun et al 2020). Therefore, it is interesting to extend the SM-SCC to multiple channels.…”

“…11 In order to suppress the starlight within a certain band, an estimate of the electric field over the band must be obtained which can then be used to determine a DM command to reduce the light in the dark zone. There are currently two accepted approaches to estimate the electric field within a broadband dark zone: (1) use an integral field spectrometer (IFS) 12 and (2) use multiple narrowband filters. 13 For both the IFS and narrowband filter approaches, any of the monochromatic electric field estimators developed, such as pairwise-probing or Kalman filters, 14 can be used.…”
