In this paper, novel control strategy to naturally balance hybrid converter is presented for medium voltage induction motor drive application. Fundamental current of the motor is produced by three-level quasi-square wave converter. Several single phase full bridge converters are connected in series with this quasi-square wave converter to eliminate harmonic voltages from the net output voltage of this hybrid converter. Various novel modulation strategies for these series cells are proposed. These lead to naturally regulated dc bus voltage of series cells. These also optimize the number of series cells required. Variable fundamental voltage and frequency control of induction motor is adopted with constant dc bus voltage of three-level quasi-square wave converter. Experimental results are also produced here to validate the proposed modulation strategies for induction motor drive using low voltage proto model. Based on above, a 2.2kV induction motor drive has been built and results are also produced in this paper.Several low-voltage 2-level/3-level inverter modules are also connected in series [2] -[3] for these applications.
