High-dose-infliximab-associated Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis: A Case Report and Review of the Literature

Abstract: A 28-year-old woman experienced severe headache and right homonymous hemianopia after receiving high-dose infliximab for Crohn's disease. Computed tomography showed hemorrhagic infarction in the left temporal and parietal lobes. An angiogram revealed left transverse to sigmoid sinus occlusion and a stagnated Labbe vein. The patient was treated surgically and achieved a good outcome. Inflammatory bowel diseases are known to accompany venous and arterial thrombosis in 1%-2% of cases. Recently, infliximab has bee… Show more

“…Further studies are needed to evaluate the role of steroids in CVST. Given their anti-inflammatory properties, thiopurines and antitumour necrosis factor (TNF) might lower the risk of thrombosis events 15 , whereas other studies documented that high doses of IFX might contribute to CVST 16 . In our study, treatment of IBD did not increase the risk of CVST.…”

“…Further studies are needed to evaluate its role in CVST. Thiopurines and antitumor necrosis factor (TNF), due to their anti-in ammatory properties, might lowered the risk of thrombosis events [14] , while some documented high dose of IFX might contribute to CVST [15] . In our study, treatment of IBD did not increase the risk of CVST.…”

“…This addition of anti-protein components to superhydrophobic materials presents another strategy to enhance blood compatibility. Similarly, a Cu-phenol-amine layer was reported by Tu and others for blood-contacting devices with antibacterial and anticoagulant properties [4]. This was based on the simple ion/molecule co-assembly of Cu(II), herbal polyphenol gallic acid, and cystamine (CySA) to fabricate a copper-phenolic-amine network.…”

“…The presence of clots can result in embolization, device malfunction, hemolysis, or they can become nidi of infection, all with potential life-threatening sequelae. Hence, surface adsorption, adhesion, and activation processes of thrombus formation need to be avoided or minimized [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 ].…”
