High Dose Isoflavones Do Not Improve Metabolic and Inflammatory Parameters in Androgen Deprived Men with Prostate Cancer.

Abstract: Background-The profound hypogonadism that occurs with androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT) for prostate cancer (PCa) results in complications such as diabetes and metabolic syndrome that predispose to cardiovascular disease. Since phytoestrogens have been associated with an improvement in metabolic parameters, we evaluated their role in men undergoing ADT. Objective-To evaluate the effects of high-dose isoflavones on metabolic and inflammatory parameters in men undergoing ADT. Methods-This was a randomized, doub… Show more

“…The total number of participants who completed the studies in inclusion criteria was 511 participants in the intervention and 531 in the placebo groups for adiponectin and 544 participants in the intervention and 529 in the placebo groups for leptin. Soy protein have been used in a variety of forms in these studies like soy-based meal replacement [18][19][20]25,26,35,36 , soy powder or formula [15][16][17]21,22,24,27,37 and capsule supplement 19,23,38 . However most of studies have been used soy powder or formula.…”

“…Three studies used a randomized crossover design 18,24,27 , two of them was also single blind 18,27 and the other study had the design of double-blind 24 . Among 18 studies 9 studies were conducted in n the United States 15,[18][19][20][21]24,25,27,36 . The effect of soy protein on both adiponectin and leptin concentration was examined in 10 studies; and 4 studies only reported adiponectin 17,18,25,38 and 4 studies only reported leptin [35][36][37]39 .…”

“…33 However, in a previous study, a high dose of 160 mg of isoflavones (20 g of soy protein) over 12 weeks did not improve inflammatory parameters in androgen-deprived men with prostate cancer. 34 Genistein inhibits the proliferation and differentiation of 3T3-L1 cells, a preadipocyte cell line, by increasing the CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein beta (C/EBP beta) activity and impacting PPAR-c protein expression. 35 Soybean fermented for longer periods improves the insulin resistance.…”

“…Participants were randomly assigned to receive 20 g of soy protein containing 160 mg of total isoflavones versus taste-matched placebo (20 g whole milk protein) for 12 weeks. The results demonstrate that isoflavones did not improve metabolic or inflammatory parameters in androgen-deprived men (Napora et al 2011). Another double-blind randomized clinical trial was conducted in 85 participants who received combined supplement containing isoflavones and curcumin or placebo daily.…”
