High efficiency CCD detectors at UV wavelengths

Abstract: The Faint Intergalactic Redshifted Emission Balloon (FIREBall) is a NASA/CNES balloon-borne ultraviolet multi-object spectrograph designed to observe the diffuse gas around galaxies (the circumgalactic medium) via line emission redshifted to ∼205 nm. FIREBall uses a ultraviolet-optimized delta doped e2v CCD201 with a custom designed high efficiency five layer anti-reflection coating. This combination achieves very high quantum efficiency (QE) and photon-counting capability, a first for a CCD detector in this w… Show more

“…The reflection of Si in the UV limits the overall QE of the detectors, and so a custom 3-layer anti-reflection coating was developed to reduce reflection in the FIREBall bandpass. 22,[29][30][31][32] Measured QE is shown in Figure 4 The detector performance was verified via testing at JPL and at Caltech. JPL testing included QE verification, 33 while the Caltech test set-up measured QE at limited wavelengths using NUVU v2 and v3 CCCP controllers 34 and a custom flight printed circuit board (PCB).…”

“…Not only will this work on charge integrating CCDs and CMOS devices, but also other silicon technologies that offer potential photoncounting capabilities such as avalanche photodiode (APD) arrays and electron multiplying CCDs (EMCCD). Surface treated EMCCDs will soon be launching on the sub-orbital rocket mission "CHESS" (Hoadley et al 2014) and the FIREBALL-2 balloon payload (Hamden et al 2014).…”

“…More details about the high QE of the detector can be found in other papers by our group. 4 Our expected QE of ∼70% is a significant increase over the GALEX MCP. More recent MCPs since the GALEX flight have achieved higher QE (around 20 percent in the FIREBall band 21 ), but a delta-doped AR-coated EMCCD still has an advantage in QE.…”
