A AB BS ST TR RA AC CT T O Ob bj je ec ct ti iv ve e: : Self-efficacy and problem solving are the main concepts of nursing and midwifery education. This descriptive study was conducted to identify the students' self-efficacy levels and to examine the relationship between self-efficacy and problem-solving. M Ma at te er ri ia al l a an nd d M Me et th ho od ds s: : Totally volunteer 251 nursing and midwifery students were participated to the study. Socio-demographic Data Form, the Self-efficacy Scale and the Problem Solving Inventory were used to collect the data. The data was analyzed with the SPSS 15.0 package using Mann-Whitney U, Kruscall Wallis, ANOVA and Pearson correlation tests. R Re es su ul lt ts s: : The students' self-efficacy scores were found to be above mean (87.90 (± SD 12.54)) and problem solving scores were below mean (91.51 (± SD 22.83). No significant difference was found between nursing and midwifery students in terms of their self-efficacy and problem solving levels (p>0.05). However, self-efficacy and problem solving levels of fourth year nursing students who reported that they received problem solving training were significantly higher than the rest of sample (p<0.05). Positive correlation was found between self-efficacy belief and perceived problem solving. Results showed that better problem solving skill, leads to an improved self-efficacy. C Co on nc cl lu us si io on n: : There are mutual effect between the concept of self-efficacy belief and problem solving skill. Further studies are needed to examine the students' characteristics, curriculum, learning environment and teaching strategy in terms of self-efficacy belief and problem solving.

Problem Statement: Problem-Solving (PS) skills have been determined to be an internationally useful strategy for better nursing. That is why PS skills underlie all nursing practice, teamwork, and health care management, and are a main topic in undergraduate nursing education. Thus, there is a need to develop effective methods to teach problem-solving skills. The present study, as a first study in Turkey, may provide valuable insight for nurse academicians employed at üniversities. Purpose of the Study:This study aims to determine the effect of problemsolving training, through a management course, on nursing students' perceived problem-solving skills and self-efficacy beliefs.Method: Study data, based on pretest-posttest application and a semiexperimental design, were collected using a socio-demographic data form, Problem-Solving Inventory, and Self-Efficacy Scale. Data were analyzed with the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 15.0 using definitive statistical analysis, the Wilcoxon test, and the Spearman correlation test for inter-scale relations.Findings: After training, the Problem-Solving Inventory (PSI) and SelfEfficacy Scale scores showed a significant difference (p<0.05). Regarding PSI subdimensions, it was determined that students receiving training perceived themselves as more competent in the Reflective Approach, the Evaluative Quick Approach, and the Planned Approach (p<0.05), but there was no difference in the Quick Approach, Abstention Approach, And Self-Reliable Approach. A positive, medium-level but statistically insignificant relation between perceived problem-solving and self-efficacy has been found. 1 1 This summary of the paper was presented at the 1st Eurasian Educational Research Congress at İstanbul University in İstanbul, April 24-26, 2014. 232 Gulsum AncelConclusions and Recommendations: This study shows that training for problem-solving through a structured management course improves confidence in problem-solving skills and self-efficacy beliefs. In light of this, nursing students should be trained in more creative ways than just traditional methods, and PS strategies related to management should be integrated into the nursing process. In this regard, academicians should be aware of the importance of the teaching method used and the content of the course. It is also considered that examining multidimensionally to what extent the nursing process improves PS skills would be useful. Further study is needed to clarify the relation between training programs and perceived problem-solving in different samples.

Nursing is an applied profession which requires the combination of theoretical content and practical skills in a meaningful way. Nursing education must help students internalize information, skills, attitudes, professional values and ethical standards concerning the discipline and make them a part of their behavior. Nursing education necessitates an education system which covers all cognitive, affective and psychomotor areas of learning at a level of adequacy that could get students to assume the specified roles. As well as technical skills, such skills as providing a holistic and empathic health care and communication and team cooperation must be included by this system. The main objective of nursing education is to train nurses who can combine theory and practice, think critically in the learning process and have acquired effective problem solving skills. In the educational settings of our day, different teaching technologies are employed at each stage of instruction. Many instructional methods and strategies are tried out for the improvement of information and skills in nursing education. A great majority of educational methods and strategies consists of computer aided education, simulation and distance education approaches.
