High frequency interruption characteristics of VCB and its application to high voltage DC circuit breaker

Abstract: High power testing methods for HV DC circuit breaker (DCCB) were investigated. Short circuit breaking tests using quasi-DC current were performed for DCCB based on the current oscillation scheme with active current injection. This DCCB has a high voltage vacuum circuit breaker as the interrupter unit. The tests were performed using two kinds of testing method (power frequency current peak method and charged reactor method) which have different breaking current waveforms. Interruption performance evaluated with… Show more

“…Greenwood and Lee [3] discussed the effects of reducing both rate of rise of current before and rate of rise of voltage after zero crossing on a theoretical basis. Experimental data supporting the hypothesis that a SI influences the interruption performance of VCBs has been published by several authors [13,14,17,18]. A comprehensive study by Yanabu et al [14] shows the impact of different SIs on rate of change of current and voltage around zero crossing.…”

“…There are two major technical schemes based on the inserted MOV principle that have been applied so far. The first scheme is what is commonly referred to as the traditional mechanical DCCB [14–16]. The second one is the Hybrid DCCB proposed by ABB in 2011 [17–19].…”
