High hepatitis B virus load is associated with hepatocellular carcinomas development in Chinese chronic hepatitis B patients: a case control study

Abstract: BackgroundPersistent hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a risk factor for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development. This study aimed to clarify whether the high HBV DNA level is associated with HCC development by comparing HBV DNA levels between HBV infected patients with and without HCC.ResultsThere were 78 male and 12 female patients in each group and there was no statistical difference between these two group patients' average ages. The HBV DNA level in the HCC patients was 4.73 ± 1.71 Log10 IU/ml while… Show more

“…Most affected individuals are male, with a prevalence of 52% to 61% in the United States [16][17][18] , 86.6% in China 19 and 41.8% to 76.1% in Brazil 10, 20, 21 , where males are 1.3 fold more likely to be infected with HBV than females 22 . In this study, 54% of the HBV carriers were male, which is similar to the rate described in the literature.…”

“…In 2008, more than 50% of all new HCC cases reported worldwide were diagnosed in the People's Republic of China [1]. This high incidence can be attributed primarily to a high prevalence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection [2]. A serosurvey performed in China in 2006, 14 years after the introduction of vaccination against hepatitis B in infants, reported a hepatitis B surface antigen prevalence of 7.2% in participants aged 1-59 years [3].…”

“…Major hepatectomy was defined as resection of 4 or more liver segments, whereas resection of 3 or less liver segments was considered as minor hepatectomy [17]. High HBV-DNA load was defined as serum HBV-DNA load higher than 10 4 copies/ml [18].…”
